Coaching for a Better Diabetes Life
That’s why the “Diabetes Coach” is becoming a resource that more PWDs are turning to. They’re not trained medical professionals, but life-balance experts who may have a lot to offer in helping us cope with our day-to-day D-struggles.
I'm not convinced that this is a valuable resource. Id rather be direct with my endo if i wasn't get thr right advice or ask online for Anecdotal experience for scenarios but am I in a minority?

Willpower in Life with Diabetes
What is willpower? As a wellness coach and personal trainer, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say, “Well, I just don’t have any willpower.”
I believe willpower is not something we have or don’t have. Willpower is something we use…or we do not use. It’s not supposed to come easily. It’s not supposed to be easily applied in the situations where we need it most. The epitome of willpower is that it requires persistence, diligence, and a great deal of self-respect in order to actually apply it to our lives.
Even though we all have some, for whatever reason we are always guilty that we dont have more

No “Days-Off” in Diabetes
One of the things that diabetes has really trained me to do well in my life is plan each day. Diabetes does not give me a day off, so I cannot give diabetes a day off either. Blood sugar checks are planned: about 10 times each day. Each meal is planned: three large meals and two smaller meals. Each workout session is planned: four to five days a week.

The Tangerine Diabetic: What’s Better? High or Low?
So following on from my piece on what classifies as a hypo (you can read it here) – and the addition of the word “waffy” to the worldwide vocabulary - I thought I’d develop the idea that the patient with diabetes and the medical professionals have different opinions on what is good and what is bad. Again I’ll be basing my thoughts on my slightly messed up thinking following 30-odd years of varying control levels and judgement. I could use medical research and qualified expert opinion but why should I start doing that now?
I have the same discussions myself

Carbohydrate counting is an important skill for those with diabetes to learn. What is carbohydrate counting? It is the ability to evaluate food and sum up the amount of carbohydrates in a meal. We call this a skill because it is something that you have to work at.

Table Tips - American Diabetes Association
Not everyone with diabetes has the same meal plan or the same nutrition goals. For some, cutting calories is most important. Others may need to limit fat and salt, and eat more foods high in fiber.
Work with your health care team to identify your own goals. Ask about eating out. If you're planning a special occasion, ask about adding some special food items.
Today its all about food
Eating Out with Diabetes
Having diabetes doesn’t deprive you of eating out. If you eat out regularly, you will need to pay close attention to food choices and serving sizes to manage your weight and diabetes.
Don’t limit your enjoyment by thinking you need to go to a special restaurant or eat special meals just because you have diabetes. You’ll soon discover that many restaurants serve foods that are suitable for healthy eating. Most will also value your patronage and are more than happy to help if you can’t find something suitable on the menu. Ask restaurant staff about the dish of your choice and the way it’s been cooked, and request simple changes if required.

Quality of guidelines on the management of diabetes in pregnancy under review
Diabetes during pregnancy can lead to severe risks for both mother and fetus when it is not managed properly. The use of rigorously developed guidelines with a robust implementation process can have a positive influence on the management of diabetes during pregnancy. This study aims to compare recommendations and assess the quality of clinical guidelines on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-existing diabetes mellitus during pregnancy.

Closed-loop Insulin Delivery: Towards Improved Diabetes Care - Kavita Kumareswaran - Discovery Medicine
Abstract: The prevalence of type 1 diabetes is escalating worldwide. Novel therapies and management strategies are needed to reduce associated morbidity. Aggressive blood glucose lowering using conventional insulin replacement regimens is limited by the risk of hypoglycemia. Even the most motivated patients may struggle to manage day-to-day variability in insulin requirements. The artificial pancreas or closed-loop insulin delivery may improve outcomes, building on recent technological progress and combining continuous glucose monitoring with insulin pump therapy. So far, closed-loop prototypes have been evaluated under controlled conditions suggesting improved glucose control and a reduced risk of hypoglycemia. Limitations include suboptimal accuracy and reliability of continuous glucose monitors and delays associated with subcutaneous insulin delivery. Outpatient evaluation is required as the next step, leading to deployment into clinical practice

Raising Diabetes Awareness - Aussie Style
To mark National Diabetes Awareness Week, JDRF is renewing its call for recognition of the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
It is important to recognise that unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. Researchers are working hard to more fully understand the complicated mix of genetic and environmental factors that may cause or trigger this disease. However, it is certain that going on a diet or cutting down on sugar doesn’t stop type 1 diabetes.
The newly launched JDRF T1D Truth Awards addresses the issue of inaccuracies in writing about diabetes, by awarding those who get it right. The awards recognise and award excellence in writing about the life and science of type 1 diabetes.
How can you help raise awareness?
- Nominate people who get it right. The most effective way to encourage accuracy in the writing of type 1 diabetes is to award those who get it right. Nominate someone now for the T1D Truth Award.
- Write to your local paper. We have provided a Letter to the Editor template here (.doc)– simply fill in your details!
- Change your Facebook profile picture. You can download the diabetes logo here.

Things I Can't Stand About My Insulin Pump
My relationship with my pump is complicated. I love it for the control it gives me over my disease, but I detest it for its flakiness, its arbitrary malfunctions, and the host of tiny aggravations that turn it from a blessing into a curse
Its an interesting one. My pump has changed my life and I would never go back to MDI but its not all sunshine all the time.

UK News - Revealed: DH plans to bundle diabetes QOF indicators worth over £5,000
Exclusive: GPs will be forced to conduct nine separate checks in each patient with diabetes under Department of Health plans to create a single diabetes QOF indicator worth over £5,000, Pulse can reveal.
Related articlesThe DH is also pushing for a change in thresholds along with the ‘composite indicator', which would include HbA1c, cholesterol, blood pressure and foot checks, in an attempt to boost achievement in the routine assessment of patients with diabetes.
The move comes after a national audit suggested only half of patients with diabetes were receiving all nine checks – a result described as ‘appalling' by patient groups.
But the findings of the National Diabetes Audit for 2010/11, published last month, have been plunged into controversy after the GPC filed a complaint over the data used in the audit.
The DH has launched an investigation into the GPC's complaint, which is due to report in September. In the meantime, it has written to NICE, asking it to look at bundling all the nine checks – currently separate indicators worth 39 points (equivalent to £5,217 per year for an average practice) – into one single indicator.
NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh wrote to NICE last month asking it to consider ‘replacing the current QOF indicators relating to the nine processes for diabetes with a composite indicator measuring the proportion of patients who received all nine of the processes'.
In the letter, he also asked NICE to review ‘the range of target measurements and associated payment thresholds'.
If successful, the new indicator could be included in the 2015 QOF.
But GPs warned the changes could mean much more work for practices and potentially lost income, and the GPC said the profession was being ‘unfairly criticised' because of the National Diabetes Audit's findings.
Dr Bill Beeby, chair of the GPC's clinical and prescribing subcommittee, told Pulse the figures from the national audit were ‘incomparable' to the achievement recorded in the QOF: ‘GPs are not putting in the codes that the National Diabetes Audit looks for, because they're not being asked to.
‘If you look for the wrong thing you won't find it. Some areas are being unfairly criticised as a result.'
GPC negotiator Dr Beth McCarron-Nash said the proposed changes would be considered as part of the normal negotiation process, but added: ‘GPs asked for stability in the QOF and we are mindful of that.'
Dr Stephen Mann, a GP in Stourbridge in the West Midlands, said the change could have a drastic impact on practice income, with the increased number of checks likely to hit uptake: ‘You'll get patients who won't comply, won't turn up, won't want to be monitored.
‘GPs will have to jump through hoops, and if they miss one thing they'll fail.'
Dr Paul Conley, a GP in Basingstoke, said: ‘GPs ensure high-level care for patients with diabetes already, and we've had so many changes to the QOF. This extreme micromanaging of complex clinical processes can have the opposite effect, and GPs feel demoralised.'
A spokesperson for the DH said: ‘We hope to work together [with NICE] and with the BMA and other stakeholders to improve the QOF and support ongoing improvements in quality and outcomes for patients.'
